Hi Group:
Bought my HomePatrol at Dayton this year - I think I've used it for three hours so far. Been working on getting it running in the car - bought Garmin puck antenna and RAM mount - today I plugged it in for the first time (Haven't used it in a few weeks) in the car...

Screen read "Illegal Voltage" then went plaid (multi colored dots in repeating pattern). Could not get unit to turn off, pulled battery. Returned battery, unit returns to plaid display.

Pressed reset - unit resumes normal operation for about 3 seconds, then dies.
Pressed reset again - normal operation for 3 seconds.

Plugged in AC adapter, tried to turn on - nothing.
Pressed reset, plugged in AC adapter, tried to turn on - nothing.

Any suggestions? At present this thing cost me $120/hour to use...

Best,

Ron

This sounds like high voltage came in through the DC jack. It will be a repair issue. Be sure to return the DC adapter along with the unit so that it can all be checked out.

Interesting - other items on car power did not complain.

Thanks - unit and both power devices are on their way to Texas as of an hour ago...

Before it gets to the DC jack, it goes through the DC adapter, which could have become faulty.

That makes sense - it died upon the first time I plugged in the DC jack.

I would have figured that if the device is smart enough to display "illegal voltage", it should have been able to protect itself from same... unless we're talking something seriously out of range.

I'm sorry I didn't read the voltages earlier - I got the impression that the lighter plug was more of a power supply than a feed through but didn't confirm it. I had wanted to snip it off and install PowerPoles to "pretty up" my installation, but that didn't look like such a good idea.

RAM mounts are pretty nice, but I'm having problems mounting all the stuff, and after MULTIPLE washings the dashboard is STILL a little slippery from the Armor All or equivalent applied by the dealership. Grr.

Looks like I might need to try to mount via suction to the windshield.

Thanks again for your help.
