Is the USB cable used to connect the bcd536hp to the computer the type that has a USB at each end or is there some other type necessary?

It's a standard USB A to mini-B cable. Make sure you don't get a "Micro USB" cable; the 'micro' connector is smaller than the 'mini' connector and not compatible.

You used to be able to find these cables literally everywhere - even 7-11 stores had them at the counter. Nowadays though, with most phones taking either Apple Lightning or Micro USB cables, you may have to go to a computer retailer to get a Mini USB cable.

The USB cable I found has a USB on one end, but on the other end is a square device where a green light comes on when it is plugged into my computer. What is that about?

I couldn't even possibly begin to guess. Cables like the ones you need are under $5 at virtually any place that sells computer or phone accessories.

If you are talking about the WiFi dongle:

That is not what connects your BCD536HP to your computer. The dongle plugs into the back of your scanner.

If you have purchased a new BCD536HP (since you seem to have the dongle) the correct cable to connect your scanner to your computer was also included in the box.

That hadn't occurred to me. Lonnie, that's probably what that is. You want a cable that has the same kind of USB connector on one end and a small connector on the other end. The end like the one on the WiFi dongle, that goes into your computer, and the other end needs to match the port on the front lower right of the 536's front face.
