Mr. Opitz:

I'm a pretty high-tech guy...one of the things that frustrates me to no end is when manufacturers make it incredibly difficult to find basic things like software downloads for a product. BCDx36HP is a prime example of this.

If I go to the product page.... www.uniden.com/scanner/id-BCD436HP/BCD436HP_HomePatrol_Series_Scanner

I should see a link to download the software. There is only a link to the Uniden Support site.

If you go to the Uniden Support site, then browse to the section on Scanners, I should see a link there. But no...not here... support.uniden.com/scanners/

Even if you go to the page for either the BCD436HP or BDC536HP...no link! Just one that takes to a page where Paul shows you how to install the software.

unidensupport.com/BCD436HP
unidensupport.com/BCD536HP

And the most pathetic??? The Uniden Scanner PC Programming Software Download page shows zero (0) results!

www.uniden.com/radio-scanners/scanner-software

Where did I finally find it? At the bottom of this page...in a section that is collapsed by default.

info.uniden.com/UnidenMan4/BCD536HP

Uniden...get your act together and learn how to build a proper support portal!

Just an example...if I go to Butel Software, I can find their product in 2 clicks. What's Uniden's excuse?

The very first link that you included in your rant.... to the product page.....

www.uniden.com/scanner/id-BCD436HP/BCD436HP_HomePatrol_Series_Scanner

has a very large banner that links directly to the software and firmware information and download page.

The link is clearly labeled " PC Software, Drivers, and Additional Information"

Did you miss that? Not sure how you could!

When you click on that banner, the resulting page has the Sentinel software download link in the second paragraph.

2 clicks to find it.

It's truncated on my computer. However there are still other pages that I referenced...including the one that shows zero results for available software downloads that need to be fixed. This is a matter of consistency in addition to clarity.

Take a look at Whistler's support site. It takes absolutely no time whatsoever to find the downloads. They are a great example of what I would like to see.

This isn't a rant. It's showing that there are better designs available that make things a lot easier to find. User experience is as important as the quality of the product. The product's quality is incredible. The UX for the Uniden.com site (and sisters) leave a lot to be desired.

Go to Whistler's site....

Select the Support drop-down. First option is Downloads. Second option asks you to select the model of the class of product. Done.

One domain - one site - two clicks to get to everything you could possibly want.

With Uniden you have:

  1. www.uniden.com
  2. www.unidensupport.com
  3. www.homepatrol.com
  4. info.uniden.com

And don't forget my.uniden.com for product registration and licenses for advanced features. It was written in a development language from the mid-to-late 90s (ColdFusion) and looks like it hasn't been touched since then.

Why are 4 different sites across 2 different domains even necessary?

I've been a Uniden scanner owner since the Bearcat days. I just find that there are clearly ways that things can be done better and that UX is not a high priority at Uniden.

Not sure how that's Uniden's fault.

That page also has a direct link to the software download page at the very top of the page.

Oh well.

I double-checked and confirmed that the first link on all the pages referenced was a link to the software download.
