Had just finished setting up my Home Patrol unit yesterday afternoon. Half hour later Local Airport pages out for assistance to all local Fire Agencies. "Aircraft inbound, Fire in APU unit, 54 souls aboard, will attempt landing on main runway, all responding units report to stage at Gate1"
Well I've worked that airport, most of the passenger aircraft are MD-80's. APU in the tail area where the engines are, also fuel lines to engines. The Sergent I relieved at midnight told me fire trucks from all over town went screaming down the highway, plus both Medivac helicopters were in the air. Where I work we are under the final approach for the East/West runway.
Thanks to my new Home Patrol, (Which I brought with me to work) I was able to inform him what had happened.
Thankfully the flight landed and all passengers deplaned safely.
