I was less than thrilled with the OEM antenna the HP came with, so I bought an SMA-to-BNC right angle adapter ($2.95 from K1CRA Radio Stores) and hooked up my Austin Condor from Grove Enterprises.

So far it makes a huge difference in the 400 & 800 mHz conventional bands and seems to clean up static on the trunked system here as well. I'm able to read signals in the 400 & 800 bands that are 30-40 miles away (as the crow flies) and were not even breaking squelch before.

It's also a lot more convenient to use if you move the scanner around a lot. The OEM whip has to be laboriously unscrewed when you transport the radio, or risk breaking it. The BNC mount, obviously, is a quick twist-off.
