Some years ago, i bought a magnet mount scanner antenna
from Radio Shack. I don't know if they still sell it, but it
has two in-rod coils, so it covers VHF-Low bands, VHF High bands,
450 mHz, and 800 mHz. If they still sell it, buy one. I've
heard most everything i need to in the car, before I had the HP
and now with it! DUKE, WB9OJD

THAT was exactly the one. I've run that antenna since 1990!
I had it on several different vehicles, and i had to mount it
to a 3/4 inch Motorola type trunk lid mount, and lately a
hatchback mount made by Diamond. I have found that it worked
on about 6 different scanners with excellent results on ALL
frequencies. I used to hear Low Band VHF Wisconsin State patrol
transmission with it, VHF high from aircraft to police bands,
450 police bands, and lately found it worked VERY well to 800
mHz Trunked channels...I attached it to HP-1 and listened to
the refarmed 800 mHz trunking system in Waukesha county when I
visit my sister! It never missed a beat, and THAT antenna is
now TWENTY YEARS OLD!!! Buy ONE! Heck, buy two, and put a
set of 19" ground radials on a mounting plate and make the
second one a base antenna. That should work too!
