I see by the news that Milwaukee Police went to some kind
of radio system, called Sky Radio or something like that.
I think is Macom?? Is that a system that Home Patrol will
hear? I used to live in Milwaukee, and visit occasionally.
I'm not a bit surprised. When a department does this for "security", they cut out a lot of people who used to help them when they were open access. That's NOT community policing, in my book. This says nothing of the technical end. On the 800 Mhz Motorola system, they did have encryption for sensitive stuff. That was more than enough security. Open Sky was a failure before it started. It just took them a while to discover what the rest of us already knew. I lived in Milwaukee County until 1982, and used to report things to the MPD. I used to listen to the MPD when we lived by the old Milwaukee Zoo on the north side, and their huge tower was in eye shot of our house. My father monitored them when they were on low band just above the broadcast band. I later monitored them on 159.15 when everything was on one channel for dispatching. I worked in security work in Milwaukee until 1982, and followed them to UHF 450 and then to 800 mHz.
Milwaukee Police have to get back to their "roots" and allow the community to be involved on a radio basis!!!
